
June 29, 2007 PULLMAN, Wash. - Eight Washington State University sports scored points in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup during 2006-07, giving the Cougars their best finish in four years. Washington State finished 70th nationally with 283 points, the Cougars best mark since a 55th place finish and school record 351.5 points in 2002-03. WSU tallied points in eight sports, tied for the most in school history (2001-02 and 2002-03). Washington State earned 50 points in men's basketball after advancing to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Both indoor and outdoor track & field scored points at the NCAA Championships in men's and women's competition. The Cougar effort accounted for 137.5 points. WSU also received points from women's golf (41.5) after the Cougar women advanced to the NCAA West Regional. A pair of programs tallying points at the NCAA Championships rounded out the scoring with women's swimming picking up 38 points after a 34th place finish and men's cross country earning 16 points for its 29th place finish. The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup point system is based on an institution's finish in up to 20 sports, 10 men's and 10 women's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
