Sept. 24, 2007 PULLMAN, Wash. -- - Former Washington State football assistant coach Jim Shanley, who worked for both Bert Clark and Jim Sweeney in the 1960's, will be inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame Tuesday, Sept. 25, in ceremonies at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. Shanley is one of six inductees who will be honored. Others include Joe Etzel, Lance Deal, Mary Ayotte-Law, Ryan Grossenbacher, "Pudgy" Hunt, Shannon Macmillan and Dewey Sullivan. When Clark took over the Cougar football program in 1964, he picked Shanley to coach the WSU secondary. When Sweeney was named head coach in 1968, he retained the Nebraska native who grew up in Oregon to coach defensive backs and coordinate WSU's recruiting efforts. Shanley retired from coaching following the 1970 season and since then has resided in Walla Walla, Wash. In the late 1970's he spent a season in the broadcast booth with veteran Cougar football broadcaster Bob Robertson. A full 50 years after last playing halfback for the Oregon Ducks, the All-Pacific Coast Conference, All-West Coast and All-American Shanley still ranks among Oregon's top ten performers in nine separate categories. He was named to PCC all-conference teams in 1955, 1956 and 1957, and to several All-America teams in 1957. Before becoming a life insurance executive in Walla Walla, Shanley returned punts for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. Shanley was a prep star at North Bend High School in Oregon, where he excelled in football, basketball and as a sprinter. He was a All-State halfback both his junior and senior years at North Bend, scoring 24 touchdowns his junior year and 15 his senior year, despite missing the last three games with a broken ankle.
