COUGAR DIAMOND SUMMARY
WSU, WASHINGTON MEET IN NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: The
Washington State Cougar baseball team,
having won three of its last six games,
heads to Seattle this week for three non-conference
games with the Washington
Huskies.
WSU, 3-10, is coming off two wins
at the Banana Belt Tournament in
Lewiston, Idaho. The Cougars beat host
LCSC 12-4 and Portland 7-1 and lost to
BYU 4-0 and Gonzaga 10-0.
The Cougars will send Tony
Banaszak (0-3) to the mound in the
Friday opener at 6:30 p.m. at Husky
Ballpark (1500). Bryce Chamberlin (2-0)
is expected to start Saturday's 1:00 p.m.
game, with either Karl Mejlholm (1-1) or
Aaron MacKenzie (0-3) the probable
starter for Sunday's 1:00 p.m. game.
Washington (6-6) played at the Battle
at the Beach Tournament in Malibu,
Calif., last weekend, losing to San Diego
5-0 in the first game, and then rallying
with a 21-10 win over Cal State
Northridge and an 8-5 victory over San
Diego State.
Five Cougars currently boast batting
averages over .300. Robert Stahlke leads
the team at .375, with Bruce Jacobsen at
.355. Derek Bruce, who has started all 13
games at shortstop, is hitting .327 and
leads the team with two home runs.
Grant Richardson, with 11 starts, is
hitting .317 and Jay Miller is hitting
.316. Miller raised his average after
starting all four games last weekend in
the outfield and collecting eight hits in
16 at-bats. He also had two doubles and
one home run.
Bruce also leads the Cougars with 16
hits, five doubles, 29 total bases and a
.592 slugging percentage. After
struggling earlier, he was perfect in the
field last week with six putouts and 14
assists. The sophomore shortstop hit .429
last week in four games.
Chamberlin, who did not travel with
the team for the first two weeks of the
season, has won both his outings and
leads the club with a 3.75 ERA while
throwing 12 innings. He has seven
strikeouts and three walks.
Banaszak has had little run support in
his four outings, just two runs. His 3.86
ERA over 25.2 innings is second and he
also has show solid control with 13
strikeouts and just three walks.
Freshman Karl Mejlholm picked up
his first win last week, holding LCSC in
check for seven innings. He gave up five
hits and just two earned runs.
